felt his arms slowly and involuntarily reach out to encircle her brutish neck.
"I can pleasure you, Harry. You know I can. I've done it so many times before; it's no different now." He was aware that her voice had grown husky with her mounting passion.
Driver tenderly forced her legs apart and pulled her down on top of him. He realized that his eyes had already closed in anticipation.
"Harry," she pleaded, "now! Promise me that we will always be lovers."
He felt the first surge and opened his eyes, looking up into the face of his dead lover.
There was a peel of guttural thunder.
The knife glinted in the sudden orange illumination of a bolt of lightning. It was plunging toward his chest.
For Harry Preston Driver there was one terrifying, fear-filled moment when the world stopped, one solitary moment when sight and sound and sensation froze in the vast spacelessness of time. Then there was pain, excruciating pain.
Even that quickly ceased.

Inspector Lawrence Dawkins arrived, as he said he would, at midmorning, expecting to launch his second round of questions and expecting Driver to mumble protests about having already answered the same questions
